Online Banking Safety

Whether it is bill payments, funds transfer, monitoring deposit accounts, or viewing your eStatements, internet banking allows you to do it in a fast and convenient way. Instead of going to the bank, internet banking has made most banking functions accessible through a few clicks or taps—including on mobile devices through banking apps.

Below are smart tips for internet and mobile banking safety.

Change your password regularly
For the first time you log in to your internet banking account, you will need to use the password provided by the bank. You should change this immediately. Continue changing your password at regular intervals and avoid reusing old ones. Keep your password confidential at all times. On mobile banking apps, also enable biometric login (fingerprint or facial recognition) when available for added protection.

Do not use public computers or unsecured devices to log in
Avoid logging into your bank account from public or shared computers such as those in cyber cafés or libraries. These systems may store keystrokes or browsing data. If you must use one, always log out completely, clear the cache and browsing history, and never allow the browser to save your credentials. For mobile banking, avoid installing banking apps on shared or jailbroken/rooted devices, as they are more vulnerable to compromise.

Do not share your details with anyone
Your bank will never ask for confidential information such as passwords, PINs, or one-time passcodes via phone, email, or text message. Never share your login credentials with anyone. Always use only the official bank website or official mobile app. Be cautious of fake websites and phishing messages designed to steal your information.

Check your accounts regularly
Review your accounts frequently, especially after making transactions online or through mobile banking. Verify that the correct amounts have been debited or credited. Report any suspicious or incorrect activity to your bank immediately so it can be investigated quickly.

Always use licensed anti-virus software and keep devices updated
Protect your computer with licensed and up-to-date antivirus software. For mobile devices, keep your operating system and apps updated regularly, as updates often include important security patches. Avoid downloading apps from unofficial sources.

Type your internet banking URL directly and use official apps only
Always type your bank’s URL directly into your browser instead of clicking links in emails or messages. Fraudsters often create fake websites that look identical to legitimate ones. For mobile banking, only download apps from official app stores (Google Play or Apple App Store) and verify the publisher before installing.

Protect yourself on networks and enable security features
Avoid accessing internet or mobile banking on public Wi-Fi networks, as they can be insecure. If necessary, use a trusted VPN. Turn off auto-connect for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in public places. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible, and use device lock screens and remote wipe features in case your phone is lost or stolen.

Staying cautious online and on mobile devices is just as important as the convenience banking provides. A few smart habits go a long way in keeping your accounts secure.
